Gulf of Mexico
Extending 367 miles along Texas' southern border, the Gulf of Mexico provides ample recreational opportunities, as well as one of the 10 largest ports for cruise ship departures — nearly one every day!
South Padre Island is located on the southernmost tip of Texas, and it is known for its beautiful sandy beaches, clear blue waters and plenty of recreational opportunities. When you want to immerse yourself in less busy nature, make sure to check out the Padre Island National Seashore.
Galveston Island is near Houston and is another popular beaches along the coast. One of our favorite are the beaches near Corpus Christi, Mustang Island and Port Aransas. Mustang Island has a State Park so the beaches are not developed, and it is not uncommon to see dolphins gliding along the waves.
One more notable beach is Matagorda Bay. More southwest of Houston, the beaches are quieter, less crowded and filled with sand dunes. During April to August the dunes are protected due to endangered turtle species laying eggs and them incubating for 2 months in the Texas warm sun.
